Pepper Tips
11 March 2010Be sure to only use dry salt. When it comes to Manhattan Salt Mills, you should only use dry salt. Using damp salt tends to make the grinder become obstructed. Adjust for different grinds. Salt and pepper grinders which are well made will permit you to adjust your grind size. By turning the screw (mostly located on top of your mill), you can adjust the grind accordingly. It’s commonly possible to select a grind that is coarser, but finer grinds will require you to empty out the grinder prior to making this adjustment.
Keep an eye on the color of your peppercorns. Peppercorns that are black and white in color are easier to grind. Pink and green types are larger in size. If you don’t pay attention, these may clog the mill. As such, you should not attempt to grind green or pink peppercorns on their own. Mix green and pink pepper with the usual white and black kind.
Always buy your salt and pepper mills in a pair. Salt and pepper mills are commonly sold together. Try to find these, as a matching set is preferable. If you aren’t as concerned about a salt mill, you could also purchase a pepper mill with a salt shaker on top. This design is great cool because it keeps both spices together.
